Description:
Adlake steel switch lock with brass clasp and attached chain. The front has Adlake embossed on the key way cover. The back is stamped with Pat. 2040482 (which was issued in 1936) and with CM St. P & P (Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul and Pacific). It is also stamped S on the back (presumably for switch). The Milwaukee Road operated until 1986 so the lock would date between 1936 – 1986.

Switch locks were used to secure railway switches in order to keep unauthorized people from changing the switches and potentially sending a train down the wrong tracks. They were also used to secure signals and other railroad property and equipment.
