Key
Description:
Original brass key. It is marked OSL for Oregon Short Line on one side and 2380 and S for switch on the other. It is also marked A & W Chicago for Adams & Westlake or Adlake.
OSL operated under that name from 1881 – 1987 and Adlake used this two lined oval maker's mark between 1890 – 1905. So the key must date between 1890 – 1905.
This key was used with a switch lock. Switch locks were used to secure railway switches in order to keep unauthorized persons from changing the switches and potentially sending a train down the wrong tracks. They were also used to secure signals and other railroad property and equipment.
