Our Commitment to History and the Future

The Northwest Railway Museum was founded in 1957. It is currently the largest and most comprehensive railroad museum in Washington State.

The Northwest Railway Museum is a Washington nonprofit corporation and is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt public charity under the Internal Revenue Code section 501 (c) 3. The organization is not a private foundation as defined by the Internal Revenue Code section 509.

The mission of the Northwest Railway Museum is to operate a nationally significant museum and heritage railway where the public experiences captivating exhibits and educational programs that confront the impactful and challenging history of railways in shaping the Pacific Northwest, actively engaging the community and inspiring future generations to preserve this transformative heritage.

The Northwest Railway Museum is committed to creating an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible culture where the contributions of all community members are valued.

The Museum utilizes expert assessment and community feedback to ensure programs, exhibits, and experiences at the Museum are crafted and operated through the lens of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.

The Northwest Railway Museum strives to maintain an exceptional heritage railway and museum that does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or age.

Governance

The Museum is governed by a twelve-member Board of Directors and is managed by a professional staff. All public programs, including the interpretive railway, are staffed by volunteers who have undergone rigorous safety and training programs. The Museum has a membership program to support operations and to develop and maintain community support.
